How a bag of frozen peas can stop anxiety and a panic attack.

I think it’s so fitting right now…..this virus is the unknown, and understandably making people feel on edge.

But I’m here to help. I don’t worry just about the virus, I worry about people’s mental health at this time.

”If’ you can do all these things in this blog you CAN get through whatever it is you are feeling right now.

IF you are feeling overwhelmed with the unknown right now please read on.

IF you feel anxiety rising and a panic attack coming, your head starts to spin, you feel like your brain is going to explode, your lungs tighten, then the sweaty palms come in, then the feeling of absolute loss of control to the point you can’t even cry now, all your body can do is pant, you probably are down on the floor or your back is pressed against a wall, vision blurs, and then all that starts again but worse and worse. I know this feeling its AWFUL.

IF just before that moment arises you can do one thing do this: put your hands in freezing ice cold water, put your head in the freezer (I’m not even joking rest your head on those frozen peas) even better get in the shower have it on as cold as it will go. SHOCK your body. Trust me it works; it brings you back into your body into the here and now and shocks the CNS system and offers immediate relief from heightened cortisol levels (cortisol is our stress hormone the ‘fight or flight’)

IF you can turn social media off for a day you can help yourself focus on what really matters. You will not miss out, if there is anything you really need to know. Someone will call you or watch real news on TV, BBC. This is real news.

IF you hear or read something which scares you. Worries you or concerns you. DO NOT take it as gospel. I’m not saying that person is purposely lying to you. But people GOSSIP, and with GOSSIP comes fake news. So, before you panic (if you do go get the cold water on your face) then sit down and RESEARCH what you have heard through reliable sources. E.g. not Susan’s Facebook, go to a reliable news channel like sky news or BBC news. Take time to read ALL the details.

For example, the rumour about ‘the army driving tanks’ was fake news. The REAL news was, the army will drive oxygen tankers if we run out of oxygen tanker drivers…..can you see how things get changed? and even the news puts fear into you.

IF you can read on…. Don’t just read the headline. The headline for that story was ‘Army are brought in the capital’ but when you read on you realise, they are always in the capital because that regiment is based there etc etc.

IF you can question everything with a positive spin. Instead of being the negative. Now this is HARD. But with practice you can do it. When everyone said to me ‘we might be on lockdown for months’ I replied with ‘but we also might not, and we might not go into lock down’ no one really knows. So just keep the positive optimistic.

IF you can keep a gratitude diary it will change your life. When you hear or see someone’s situation it’s easy to get into the mindset of why your situation is worse than theirs. Well STOP. It might be worse but thinking about why it’s worse won’t help.Get a notebook. Once a day write in just 3 things you are grateful for. If you find it hard to start with go for simple stuff like ‘pizza’ ‘gin’ ‘my kids’ it will help.IF you can’t sleep. Write down what’s worrying you and do some relaxation exercises. IF you can get some exercise in, go for a walk (without your phone) while you walk notice the nature around you, count the daffodils, listen to the birds….

IF you can learn to mediate or to ‘sit’ it will change your life. There are mediation apps, and loads on YouTube. It’s also something I’m going to start posting more about too. Something which is so amazing, it can be done anywhere, and everyone should do it 🙂 the first time you do it, it will be hard, but it’s like going to the gym it gets easier, to start with just aim for 2 mins, breathe in, when you breathe out count 1, breathe in, breathe out count 2. Keep going to 10. Can’t get to 10 without your mind going crazy? Aim to count to 4. Then start at 1 again.

IF you can repeat a calming phrase to yourself. Take a deep breath in and breath out and say “I am safe and I am loved” repeat 3 x.

IF you can learn a new hobby or read a new book, it will get you off your phone and let your creative mind flow!

IF you can be present. So whatever you are doing just do that, eating just think about eating, making a drink? Just think about making a drink.

REMEMBER: Depression is the Past, Anxiety is the future. We must learn to live in the present.

IF you can do all these tips. And more you can defeat anxiety.

IF you believe in yourself, know that you are precious, you are important, and everything you need is on its way to you. Then the world is your oyster and you will be a Queen – my love 🙂
